The new governing bodies for the 2026–2028 term were formally appointed at the Alfândega do Porto Congress Centre, where Luís Pedro Martins, President of Porto and North of Portugal - Convention & Visitors Bureau, reaffirmed commitment to maintaining and surpassing the historic growth achieved in 2025. This commitment was made in the presence of more than 200 guests, including dozens of mayors from across the region, the President of Turismo de Portugal, and leaders from key tourism and regional institutions.
Last year was a milestone for the region, leading domestic tourism and outperforming the national average, with international overnight stays growing at a rate 5.7 times higher than the national average and accounting for 90% of Portugal’s net growth in international demand, driven by both key and emerging markets.
These results, as highlighted by the President, are the outcome of a coordinated effort between Turismo de Portugal, Turismo do Porto e Norte de Portugal, municipalities, and tourism companies across the region.
Looking ahead, three priorities were outlined:
• Continue driving growth across the four sub-destinations — Porto, Minho, Douro, and Trás-os-Montes
• Reinforce the role of tourism as a driver of regional development and territorial cohesion
• Enhance coordination between all stakeholders to maximise upcoming opportunities
The session also highlighted the need for strategic decisions on the expansion of Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport, alongside a call for close attention to the current international context and its impact on travel demand.
