Porto and the North of Portugal was honoured with seven Best of the Year 2020 awards and the wines of the region won three of the four categories of best wines at the Grandes Escolhas Awards, on March 4th.
In a streamed online ceremony, the magazine VINHOS Grandes Escolhasawarded several initiatives and personalities that, during the past year, stood out in the fields of national gastronomy and wine. Seven of the twenty Grandes Escolhas Trophies came to Porto and the North of Portugal. VERCOOPE, in Santo Tirso, won the award for best Cooperative Winery, the Trophy for Best Fortified Wine Company was awarded to Sogevinus, in Vila Nova de Gaia, where World of Wine won Wine Tourism of the Year and Enoteca 1756 won Best Wine Bar. Unique Flavours, in Matosinhos, won the Gourmet Shop category and the restaurant Toca da Raposa, in Erverosa do Douro, was honoured as the best Traditional Cuisine Restaurant. Anselmo Mendes, from Monção, was recognised with the Senhor do Vinho award.
For the second consecutive year, the tasting panel also chose the TOP 30best wines and the best wine in each category. The Northern region won three of the four awards: Best Sparkling Wine, Murganheira Vintage Távora-Varosa White sparkling wine 2011, produced by Sociedade Agrícola e Comercial do Varosa; Best White, Guru NM Douro White wine, by Wine & Soul; and Best Fortified Wine, Sandeman Porto Vintage 2018, by Sogrape Vinhos.
